Day 4

Image
The goal of day 4 was to make it back to Reykjavik.  The wind was very low and it was actually rather pleasant out. On the way back we passed by the glacier lagoon again and saw a couple of huge chunks of ice out on the beach and had to stop and check it out. This ice chunk is huge! It was low tide at this point but it looked really neat with the water around it. Same piece of ice from a different angle and me for scale. This piece of ice was a little smaller but still a little taller than me.  It looked super pretty with the sun shining through the ice. This one just glowed! Yes, I'm having fun taking these pictures. One last shot and then it was time to get back to the car. One last shot of the glacier. The drive down was easy and uneventful.  In Reykjavik we had a small apartment that we rented instead of a hotel which delighted Wren.  She had quite a bit more room to crawl around and explore which delighted her.  It...

Glacier lagoon day 3

I'm back in Boise now which makes this whole process so much easier!  Blogger is great but doesn't work so well on an ancient iPad when trying to keep a baby out of trouble in a foreign hotel, lol!  I'm happy to be able to see my pictures on a bigger screen and adding them to the blog is SOOOOO much easier.  The posts should come a little faster now.   Part of the Vatnajokoll glacier dumps in to a lagoon that then goes out to see.  This is super beautiful as the chunks of ice break off of the glacier and float out to sea.  The lagoon is beautiful and the ice chunks that get washed up on the black sand beaches are amazing.  I think I could have spent a whole week just exploring this area as it was completely stunning and as the light changed the mood of it changed to.  I was really happy the weather was a little bit more tolerable and we were able to take Wren in the Ergo Baby.  She was happy to hang out on papa and take a little nap. Se...

Iceland day 3 ice cave

Image
Day three was huge for photos so I'm breaking it into 2 chunks so that it's less crazy.   This trip both Jeff and I picked one adventure that was totally non compatable with a baby.  I wanted to do a glacier hike that went to an ice cave.  The cave had a frozen waterfall in it.  Unfortunately there was an avalanche a few days ago that filled that cave with snow.  No one was in it and the guides stopped using it a few days before the avalanche because they could see the snow accumulation near the entrance.  Instead I was able to check out another icecave with less hiking, easier access and no waterfall.  I was a little disappointed to loose the burley factor on my adventure, but it was amazingly beautiful. We woke up to this terrible view of the ocean and glacier. After breakfast, I met up with the guide for the cave trip while Jeff and Wren were going to hang at the hotel.  On the drive out we saw a heard of reindeer along the side of the road. ...

Iceland day 2!

Image
Day 2 started with a beautiful sunrise. The b&b we were staying at had horses that we could pet.  Many people have these stocky, shaggy horses.  They are mostly uses for "hobby and tourists" but the also have various horseman competitions and the are sometimes used for farm work to get around or help heard sheep or cattle.  The agriculture is pretty much grass to feed the sheep and cows in the winter.  It seems like they bring the sheep and cows into barns durring the worst of the weather in winter.  In summer the sheep are left to roam free all over Iceland and "everything it covered in sheep".  The sheep outnumber the people by quite a bit.  At the end of summer everyone helps gather up all the sheep and then they are sorted and returned to their owners based on their ear tags.   After saying hello to the horses we set off to see waterfalls. Waterfalls in Iceland end in "foss".  This is Urridafoss. Here is a closeup of the gigantic hole...
