Switzerland 2018: Getting home and some last thoughts

We (of course) were running slightly late for the airport.  We always seem to be running a little late. Note to anyone traveling with kids :  make peace with being a little late for everything.  No matter how much of a buffer you have, a potty emergency, hungry baby, inconvenient diaper change, something will make you late. When we were checking in there was some confusion because for our second leg, there was no boarding pass for Flynt because he was a lap baby.  Since we change airlines this confused the Swiss air guy and made us a bit late.  The Zurich airport is huge and of course we had to go to the furthest away part of the airport so this was mildly stressful but we got to our plane on time.  The real problem happened when we were boarding and looked at our tickets for the first time.  We were not all seated together!?! Jeff was in the middle seat in the row in front of Wren, Flynt and I.  We had developed a good system on the last flight for dealing with the kiddos but it

Today was our last fun day of vacation.  The plane ride home doesn't count because that is never fun, lol. We headed to Zurich today.  On the way we got caught up in "cow traffic".  They were moving a herd down the road and we were stuck behind them for a little while.  Wren thought it was awesome.  They had people holding ropes at the front and back of the small herd and that kept the cows from crossing in front of on coming traffic.  It was all very organized and the cows seemed like this was nothing new to them.  It was fun to see. Zurich is a cool city in that they have public bikes you can borrow for free.  Because of this, it is almost impossible to find a place to rent a bike.  It was our plan to get a bike and explore the city on bikes.  There are some really nice places to ride.  The downside is we were unable to get a bike with a kid seat.  They have them but they were all taken out for the day so we had to abandon that plan and just wander around on foot

We woke up early today and went out to breakfast.  We went to a little café in Lauterbrunnen and had interesting waffles.  Mine was bacon, waffle, egg, banana and maple syrup (all on the waffle), Jeff had waffle, ham, egg, hummus and cheese.  It was delicious and we just fed Wren from our plates.  We took the lift up to Grutschalp and then hiked to Winteregg.  The mountains were covered in fog and clouds but every once in a while they would peak though.  The path was flat and easy.  There was a fantastic playground at Winteregg and we stopped for a 30 minute play break.  We started hiking towards Murrin and were almost there when we saw what we are calling the “cow parade”.  Every fall the cows are taken from the upper pastures to the lower ones and they are decorated and they are walked down the mountain paths to Lauterbrunnen.  We just accidentally were on the right path at the right time to witness this cool thing that happens only twice a year (once going up, in

The kiddos needed an easy day with regular naps and a little less adventure so we tried to give the what they needed.   I was up early with Flynt and decided to try to run again. It was a beautiful road, a beautiful morning but my left calf is still hating me.   I almost made it home (I was less than a block away and it seized up on me again) before it got mad at me.   I’ve been gimping around all day on my calf (but my back is happier?).   Bodies are weird.   The point is it was a beautiful run and I enjoyed myself very much and there were a ton of cows and sheep and goats along the road and their bells were my music on my run instead of my MP3 player and it was lovely. I took a quick shower and ate breakfast in the apartment and helped get the littles going for the day before taking a brief adventure into Interlaken by myself.   I wanted to do some shopping this trip and this was pretty much my only chance.   I took the bus to the train station, barely mak

Today was our less active, more touristy day.   We actually drove the rental car around to get to places instead of walking or taking public transit.   We drove to Thun which is about 50 minutes away from where we are staying.   We checked out the castle and wandered through the old town a little bit.   We grabbed some lunch near the river at an Italian place.   It was nice patio dining although the sun was a little intense and our umbrella was not quite in the right spot so Jeff and I kept doing silly leans to try and keep from cooking in the sun.   Wren and Flynt got the good spots. We did a little more wandering around Thun.   There is a covered bridge in the river that has some flood gates to regulate the flow of water.   They were originally built in 1724. They were partially open when we were there which created a wave in the water that some guys were surfing.   We had planned on doing more but with our late start and slow lunch, it was time to move on.
