New York, first two days.

Jeff (husband) told me on mother's day that he got us tickets to go see Hamilton on Broadway and arranged for my parents to watch Wren (our baby) while we were on vacation.  Here is our trip!

We flew in to Newark on the 4th of July in the afternoon.  There is a train that goes from the Newark airport to New York city for $15 plus tax.  This is a crazy good deal since it costs that much for tolls alone. We had just enough time to check into our hotel (we stayed in a small hotel called Muse one block off of Time's square.  It was a fantastic hotel and location)  and get cleaned up before we headed out.

We knew that people would be camping out all day for the good fireworks locations so we decided to try to beat the crazy crowds and found a private venue that was in a taller building to watch fireworks.  It was on the upper east side.  We showed up with a long line to enter the building, mostly due to a tiny elevator and 21 floors to go up.  Once we finally got in it was very crowded.  We grabbed a little bit of food from the buffet and tried to eat standing in an extremely crowded area since there were no places we could sit or go.  It felt extremely claustrophobic and both of us were about ready to call it done when things opened up a little bit.  It was still crowded (by Boise standards) but we at least had a big enough bubble that people stopped stepping on me and elbowing me (being short sucks in a crowd).

After a little while of standing around feeling awkward we decided to stand in line to go up a level.  They had people monitoring the number of people on each floor (my guess is fire code?).  The venue was the 21st, 22nd floors and the roof.  I think part of the crowding issues was it was raining a bit so no one wanted to go on the roof until the rain died down.  We made it up to the 22nd floor and found a really nice spot.  Jeff wasn't sure which direction we were facing but though it was the right direction for fire works and they were supposed to start in a couple minutes.  I even had a place to sit.  Right about the time we got settled the fireworks started!  We had a great and comfortable view.  The only detractor was that the windows were sloped so there was some rain drops on them.  The wet windows seem more obvious in the pictures than they were in person.

After the fireworks everyone cleared out.  Jeff and I went up to the roof and there were only about half a dozen other people up there and the rain had stopped so it was lovely and the city views were great.

We had a really nice evening and then headed back to the hotel.  We were very glad we stayed and watched the fireworks.

The next morning we decided to checkout the Highline park.  The park was build on a section of high line train tracks that are no longer in use.  It is about a mile long and is really quite lovely.  Its a strip of green in the middle of the city and is really interesting.  We walked through Times Square on the way so here is the obligatory Times Square picture.

The Highline went right between buildings and was above the street.  It was such a neat way to walk the city.
There were many art exhibitions as well.  This was a smart car made out of used tires with an apple tree growing out of it.
Jeff and I lounging on one of the nice chairs in the park after we ate some delicious gelato.
This is me pretending to hug another art exhibit.  It is a very realistic looking guy in tighty-whiteys.  People kept toughing him to see if it was a sculpture or a really still street performer.

After a nice long walk and a stroll through Greenwich Village we wound up at Washington park and watched a jazz band play that was pretty good.
It was then time to get back to our room and get cleaned up for our show.

We had a fantastic sushi diner and some good saki which is hard to find in Boise (living in Saijo for a year made us a little picky).  And then off to the show.

Here is us waiting in line...

This is the set.  Very basic but functional and works well with the story.
Jeff looking super sharp at the hotel.
Love my dress!  I don't normally toot my own horn too much but it was super nice to get all fancy and pretty and feel beautiful.  Not something I do much with my 13 month old, lol, so it was a treat!

And just one more of the walk home through Times Square.  We were close enough to the theater that we walked to dinner, the show and then back to the hotel.  I definitely walk a little slower in my monster red heels but it was still doable.

And yes, we got the CD from the show.

Hamilton was awesome!!!  There is a reason why it got so much good press.  We were lucky enough to see it with Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton.  He really is a fantastic performer and we were really pulled into the show.  I highly recommend this show even if you aren't a "musical theater" person.  Give it a shot, it really is wonderful.

That's all for now, I've got to go cook dinner, lol!
